“The Newman PTC Curriculum Enhancement Committee” is quite a mouthful that will tend to leave you out of breath, so in “everyday speak”, we’re just “CE”! This is the purpose of our work on this committee: In close cooperation with the teachers and administration, we help the curriculum come alive by scheduling artists and presenters to come to Newman and enhance all our children’s school experience and learning.
Some of the programs that we bring in are specifically tied in to one grade level and one curriculum unit. Examples of this from last year’s schedule are mime Robert Rivest, who came to enrich the kindergarten students and their alphabet learning experience with his “Alphabet Show”, or the Paul Revere House visit from historian Gretchen Adams that came to all fifth grade classrooms to teach the students about “The Man Behind The Myth”. Other events are multi-grade level; “Unseen Borders” for the K-2 students, was held in December, full-school; “ZestFest” with choral leader Nick Page, was in January. Town-wide events also take place, where all or most of the students in Needham from K through 12 experience the same event or artist Historical character actor Rochel Coleman came in April to all 1-5 students at Newman with his show called “Shadowball”. This will be seen by all 1-5 students in Needham (including St. Joe’s), and by some of the middle schoolers.
Some programs are narrowly defined; Greg Tang worked with the 3rd graders on addition and multiplication computation in March, while others are multi-disciplinary and incorporate two or three curriculum areas into one event; fourth graders learned about land forms and art appreciation from art historian Jill Sanford in January. Except for the occasional grant, the vast majority of our budget is funded by the PTC. By the end of the school year, we hosted around 20 events, while planning 20 for this school year.
New members for this committee are always welcome, as the dual responsibilities of executing this year’s program while planning next year’s program are extensive. We are especially looking for parents of younger students and we will provide training and guidance as needed. There are all sorts and sizes of responsibilities: You can host events that your child participates in, you can help out with an administrative piece that can be done at home, or you can help preview possible artists for future scheduling: We’ll take any time and interest you have and put it to good use!
